# The Making of Arduino - IEEE Spectrum

[![Group portrait of the Arduino project creators](/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/10NWArduinothumbnail-1319573650417.jpg)](/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/10NWArduinothumbnail-1319573650417.jpg)

Even knowing that the name Arduino was rooted in Italian, I have often wondered what it meant.  David Kushner of [IEEE Spectrum](http://spectrum.ieee.org) has a [great write-up on the beginnings of the Arduino project](http://spectrum.ieee.org/geek-life/hands-on/the-making-of-arduino "The Making of Arduino").

Great read.  The most surprising thing to me is that over 250,000 official boards have sold since 2005.  That isn't counting clones and stand alones.  Wow!
