This board was about the size of an Arduino Uno with some GPIO pins, a VGA, USB, SD Card, PS2 Style Port, and a USB Host connector. At the time, the Lattice Mach XO2 provided the base logic. It found some success in the emulation community (*cough* x86 *cough*.) Unlike software emulators, the FPGA emulates the actual digital logic of classic computer ICs. Also known as ASICs.

2015 Holiday Gift Guide

This week marks the start of the 2015 Holiday Shopping Season. Being a short week for me, I thought I’d offer up some gift suggestions for engineers.
Being the only engineer in my immediate family, gift giving time is always interesting. Many times I wished I could give them a list of unusual items, without saying “here buy these.”
Whether you want to gift something to a fellow electronics enginerd or you to offer your family some suggestions, there is something on this list.

FleaFPGA Introduction

Can’t find the digital chip you need on Mouser or just wish you could make it yourself? With the FleaFPGA board, you can! As a college freshman, we heard rumors of a custom Integrated Circuit (IC) class. Surely what had to be a senior level class, I couldn’t wait until I understood electrical engineering enough that I got to make my own IC!
Two years passed, I was learning Verilog and VHDL in a class titled “Complex Programmable Logic Devices.” In short, CPLD. Those devices were the precursors to today’s modern FPGA devices.
