Turns out many others are interested in Mac-Geocaching software. Since cmiyc.com was a originally my personal site (and really my web sandbox), I’ve decided to move MacCaching. The first thing to go is the Blog. The main site is now: maccaching.com and the blog is maccaching.com/blog. Everything else (news, downloads, and latest) will be mirrored between the two sites for a month or so.

Quick Fix: v0.2.4_r1

Turns out my complier isn’t creating i386 (Intel) binaries correctly. Check them out! \* A dialog will pop up asking which CacheList you want to transfer to your GPS, instead of defaulting to all. \* You can edit existing Caches by double clicking on them. (This is also a good way to view the extended Geocaching.com information.) \* gpsbabel is now embedded in the App bundle. You don’t have to locate it, I’ll always put it there.

Get the latest bugs, er, features.

Since this software is in constant development, I thought I’d start releasing my “in between versions.” These are basically the builds I use while I’m busy breaking the development code to do something new. If you are a premium member, then you have access to the GPX files. MacCaching was made around the GPX files. You can load a single cache or you import a pocket query. Initially, MacCaching didn’t support LOC files, so I created this wrapper around gpsbabel.
It is now a standalone LOC to GPX Converter for OS X (2.7mb). Simply drop your LOC file onto the program’s window and a GPX will be generated.

MacCaching v0.2.3 Released!

This one took me much longer to complete than I had planned. I decided to go back and fix things I was putting off. For example, the Preferences work now and the program won’t crash if you delete your Library. Download v0.2.3 Here.
This is the first Mac application I’ve ever created, so I am learning as I go along. You’ll notice the new disk image only has two files (well 3 with the README). You should be able to drop these into your Applications folder and be off. The only gotcha I haven’t worked out on first launch is locating gpsbabel. You have to do that manually (sorry).

v0.2.3 is almost ready

Tonight I spent most of time working on usability issues. For example, now you can select multiple caches to delete or move to a playlist. Also fixed the navigation in the cache list, so the keyboard’s arrows can be used now. There was a bug when deleting caches from the main library. They didn’t get deleted from the Cachelist.
I’ll package up another release once I finish with the Preferences Manager (1/2 done).

Paperless by iPod

Next week i start traveling for an extended period. One of the reasons I started this project was to help with caching in new areas. So I’m working on importing a pocket query from geocaching.com. Right now things like the descriptions and hints are lost on import. I’m working to not drop those.
In addition, I’m going to put hooks in for iPod syncing. You’ll have the option of sync through your Address Book or through the “Notes.” The trade-off is, your address book can become full of caches. However, to use the “Notes” you’d have to enable Disk Usage in iTunes.

Quick follow-up release: 0.2.1

After “releasing” 0.2, I realized there were a couple of hard-coded things which don’t work on other systems. I’ve resolved them. You can now delete waypoints from the library (or a playlist.) The only two ways to add waypoints is from a new “Download” or Importing a GPX file. Also I fixed the bug where the program wouldn’t actually call gpsbabel.
MacCaching v0.2.1 is now available for downloading (2.5mb).
Next on the list is “sticky” preferences.

Podcacher Logo

Halloween Release

The screenshot isn’t up to date, I didn’t spell check the README, the icon doesn’t show up, and the list of known issues is longer than the features. However. If you’re looking for a Universal Binary that lets you communication with a Garmin GPS, you’ve got it. The best part, it is free. Not $100, not $49.99, or not even twenty-bucks.
Granted, it doesn’t do a whole lot…. yet.
I’m targetting an update every 2 weeks until 1.0.0.

Progressing toward v0.2

I made significant progress this weekend towards v0.2. I am able to download (transfer) GPS coordinates from my Garmin eTrex Venture and import them into the library. I paused work on the Library manager because of a bug in my development enviornment. Since I discovered a work-around, I will move back to completing the v0.1 features. After the final Library features are implemented, I’ll work on coordinate uploads. Once I can upload and download coordinates, I’ll release v0.2.

Roadmap to v1.0

0.1: - Basic Libary Support - Basic Playlist Support - Integrate the coordinate converter utility
0.2: - Initial gpsbabel support. GPSBabel has a OSX port, but it didn’t work with my unit. GPS Connect looked promising, but doesn’t appear to be in active development.
As I got started with Geocaching, I found I wanted a way to organize all of the little GPX files litering my desktop. I also thought it’d be nice if I had a central place I could come back to and see the list of caches I’m currently seeking. In other words, something to link me back to geocaching.com.

penny-backer bridge.jpg

About CMiYC.com

CMiYC is my online name which I have used for over a decade. I first started using my online name during the BBS-era. The cyberspace name meant, good luck finding me since I wasn’t online as much as most people. I would leave it as a tagline. When I got my first car, a first-year Dodge Neon, I would street race. Not exactly the smartest thing ever, mind you. These days, I keep it on the track.
