# BoxMaker: Create a new box - perfect for laser cutters!

When I was working on [BinBoo (A Binary Clock)](/projects/binboo/ "BinBoo – Binary Clock"), I decided I was going to create a custom enclosure with a laser cutter.  The process took me a couple of iterations.  The very [first box I had cut](http://www.flickr.com/photos/9849051@N04/6436863505/in/set-72157627869809187 "Failed attempt at laser cutting") didn't hold together because I didn't make enough "teeth."  The [2nd box](http://www.flickr.com/photos/9849051@N04/7230442774/in/set-72157627869809187 "Finished BinBoo") included these and holds together solid.

After all of that work, I was pointed to [BoxMaker which makes Laser Cutting a Box very simple](http://boxmaker.rahulbotics.com "BoxMaker").  Check out how easy it is with these 4 steps.

## Step One:  Choose your Options

![BoxMaker dimensions form showing 4-inch width, 5-inch height, 6-inch depth, and 0.1875-inch material thickness](/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/BoxMaker-Options-1-300x180.png)

One of the big advantages to using this script is defining the material thickness.  For example, BinBoo is stuck with 3mm material because that's how I designed the notches.  I have to re-design from the start to use another type of material.

## Step Two:  Download the PDF

![BoxMaker page with a generated PDF download](/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/BoxMaker-PDF-DL-2-300x146.png)

## Step Three:  Check out the box

At this point the you can submit the file to a laser cutter or import it into a vector program to make modifications.  Simple, eh?

What's really cool is, the script is open source and can be found here:  ![GitHub logo linking to the BoxMaker source code](/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/github-icon.png)[You can even Fork the code on GitHub](https://github.com/rahulbot/boxmaker).
